But when you're looking for a cheap place to rest your head for the night, the word "motel" flashes bright.
Many motels are great places and offer a good bargain. But a handful are no bargain at any price.
Since most smaller motels aren't included in the search results you get from the major hotel booking sites, it's hard to get reliable information.
However, consulting the consumer review sites like Yelp, Yahoo Travel, TripAdvisor and others can help. It's usually a good sign if the motel is listed with AAA or is a member of Superior Small Lodging.
So, word to the wise: do your homework before you make your reservation and put your money down.
