Tips for getting the best rate:

Check for added fees - usually hidden in the "Taxes and Fees" line item on sites like Expedia.
Read the fine print - many sites add a $25 cancellation on top of the hotels cancellation penalty.
Make sure you are seeing all rates - AAA, AARP and Govt discounts are not usually posted on many sites because they are non-commissionable.
Look for specials that offer discounts for extended stays of 2 or more days.
Weekdays are typically less than weekends in the Poconos.

Tips on making hotel reservations in the Poconos - continued from above:

Now, usually, the best way to make a reservation is directly with the hotel. However, I've made it convenient for you to book your stay on this site without having to pay more than you would if you booked direct. I would certainly appreciate you booking through my site, but don't feel like you have to. Here's what I've done to make booking on this site good for YOU:

NO booking fees: Most hotel web sites won't freely admit it, but most display rates are generally the same wherever you look. However, many sites charge some sort of extra booking fee - usually 3 - 4% of the total. The fee is usually "hidden" along with the sales tax portion of your bill. This site charges no fees.

NO Upfront Charges: Many sites make you pay the entire stay's total "upfront" - even when the Hotel has no such requirement. I follow the hotel's policy and usually, although not always, a reservation made through our Sabre connection does not charge your credit card at the time of booking. Your credit card is used to hold the room, and if you don't cancel within the prescribed time, you may be charged for the room - BY THE HOTEL. Make sure you cancel within the grace period if you are going to cancel. The exception is with our steeply discounted HOT RATES.

NO Cancellation Charges: Many sites charge you a fee, sometimes $25, for either changing your reservation or canceling. Ouch! This is beyond what the hotel may impose. I don't add any cancellation penalties or fees - other than what the hotel might charge if you fall outside their grace period.

Finally, a word of caution: when you make a reservation, make sure you read all the terms and conditions. And, while what I've written above is generally true, there are exceptions to everything, so please keep this in mind.
